Hiraka-machi is dotted with numerous spring water. Among them, the Biwa swamp in the center of Asahama originates from numerous spring water. Masumi Sugae talks about Biwa Shimizu (Biwa Numazuma) in the “Sawa no mae”. According to it, it seems that it was named Biwa Shimizu because the shape of the swamp is just like a biwa. Also at that time (1825) seems to have been called Fujinuma.

Shimizu has been closely involved in the lives of people since ancient times, including dyeing for domestic water, agricultural water, ashikuma indigo dye, asahikari and other dyeing industry and current Asahi Sake Brewery "Heavenly Door", Maizuru Brewery "Asanno" Sake industry was also developed. At that time it was an important industry called 12 dyeing houses and 12 liquor stores.
In the swamp, the two species of Tomio and Ibaratomyo (Harasakko), which use spring water as their habitat condition, are mixed without causing hybrids, respectively. As a nationwide one of the mixed fields of both species, the Biwa swamp was designated as Akita Prefecture Designated Natural Monument with Tenryu swamp and Arawa Oshuma.
